The Playa del Carmen area of Mexico has no shortage of things to do as a family. And the Mayakoba area in particular, is rife with possibilities. During our visit this past week, we found plenty of family friendly activities at the Fairmont Mayakoba.
Go on a bike ride: The Fairmont has bikes which a family can borrow for the duration of vacation with them. Small children are also given a helmet. In addition, the Mayakoba area has plenty of wonderful winding bike trails through the jungle to truly experience the mangroves up close.
Make a pinata: The kids club at Mayakoba has plenty of activites throughout the day for kids and up to three hours at the club is included in your resort charges. One of our kid’s favorite activities was making an authentic Mexican pinata and, even better, breaking the pinata and eating all the candy!
Experience the water slide: The pool by La Laguna restaurant has plenty of family friendly vibes and the water slide is a favorite. Not too big, not too small, this water slide is a crowd pleaser for all kids.
Play cards in the lobby lounge: The lobby lounge has cool ocean breezes and friendly staff. We couldn’t find a more pleasant place for a family game of Uno.
Collect shells on the beach: The sand on the beaches in the Playa del Carmen area is like sugar and shells abound. I had a fantastic time walking along the beach with my son, collecting shells.
Watch a movie at movie night: All parents need a little break once in awhile and the kid’s club at the Fairmont is happy to help. Every night from 5 to 8, the club hosts a movie night. Kids come for dinner and a craft making activity and from 6:30 to 8, a kid friendly movie is shown. Our kids had a great time eating popcorn and watching Despicable Me, while Keith and I enjoyed dinner alone at one of the hotel’s fantastic restaurants.
Take a boat ride: The Fairmont Mayakoba is in a very unique area along the beach, but also within the mangroves. Taking a boat ride through the waterways is fun for the whole family and offers views of birds, turtles, fish and, if you’re lucky, crocodiles.
Have a kiddie cocktail at the swim up bar: Our kiddos were fascinated to see the bar built into one of the swimming pools. “Mom, that bar is IN the water!!” Swimming up to the bar and ordering a kiddie cocktail was something they wanted to do every day.
Take out a Hobie Cat or a paddle board: Included in the Fairmont’s resort fee is free rental of the Hobie Cats or the paddle boards. If you can sail or paddle board, spending some time sailing the Caribbean Sea offers some wonderful family bonding time.
Rent a car and explore the area: Much like what we did on our trip to St. John last month, we rented a car and took off exploring. The car rental place is right in the Fairmont and offers pretty reasonable rates. We drove to Tulum to see some Mayan ruins and stopped at Akumal for lunch by the seashore.
There is no shortage of family friendly activities at the Fairmont Mayakoba and these ten things are just the tip of the iceberg! We can’t wait to go back.
