Start Here: Traveling With Kids
Heck yes you can travel with kids! In fact, I argue that there are great deals to be had when you have children as opposed to without. Too many people think that having babies and having a family reduce your life to nothing but dirty diapers, pinching pennies, non-stop cooking and breaking up arguments. While all of those factors exist when you start a family, life does not end if you are an avid traveler….in fact, it’s just beginning when you start traveling with kids. My goal with this blog is to help people figure out the ins and outs of traveling with kiddos and to make it easier for you! And to help you appreciate travel with kids.
I remember when I was pregnant with my first, I expressed a desire to go to Central America and a friend of mine said she was “laughing hysterically because there was no way that was going to happen after babies.” Well, I vowed that was not going to happen and after we moved to Qatar, we visited 13 different countries. And since we’ve been back in the U.S., we’ve visited Nicaragua, Mexico, several Caribbean islands, much of the United States, Colombia and Tanzania (and the island of Zanzibar off the coast). In my opinion, it is essential to show children that other places, cultures and economies exist outside of their little bubbles. I vividly remember my parents taking my sister and I to Jamaica and, instead of hunkering down in our little resort for a week, my dad hired a local to take us around to see the good, the bad and the ugly…..pretty markets with trinkets, beautiful sugar cane fields and extreme, shocking poverty. We couldn’t believe that people were living in these tiny little wood huts with tin roofs and dirt floors and it was eye opening. That was 6th grade and the beginning of my love for seeing the world.
Travel with kids can be a daunting task and too many people let that get in their way. Will you be doing extreme adventure travel and scaling mountains? Probably not. But you can fit in a little bit of everything to satisfy the whole family without having to resort to Disney World every time you travel. And actually, even Disney now has extremely interesting vacations around the world to satisfy that adventure travel bug that many of us have. Disney vacations can make travel with kids even easier!
